The new Oripeau website is online. More to come for the 10th anniversary.

  • Presentation

Oripeau is an international, participatory visual arts project that has been running since 2016. Every week, Oripeau shows new visual creations in public spaces.

The project brings together artists from various backgrounds worldwide, including graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, architects, visual artists, calligraphers, street artists, painters, as well as journalists, poets, accountants, and more.

Originally started in Nantes, Oripeau has expanded its reach to the streets of Montreal, Canada, since 2020.

  • Definition

Oripeau: n. m. (from old French orie, meaning gold, and pel, meaning skin): Literary. Used clothes that still have some of their old beauty. In the singular, oripeau referred to a piece of gold leaf, a thin sheet of copper that looks like gold, or fabric with fake gold or silver.

  • Mission

Oripeau wants to bring more graphic variety to our cities.

Digitalization and marketing have standardized our visual environment. The presence of the same styles influences the increasing number of projects that follow this trend. In this context, Oripeau’s mission is to reintroduce graphic diversity into our daily lives. Using the form of advertising panels, Oripeau displays different visual proposals every week, celebrating the variety and endless expressions of art.

Oripeau is not meant to be a gallery; it provides free spaces. These boards are windows into our workshops and practices, sharing our ideas and experiments. It serves as a space for mediation and sharing accessible to everyone.

  • Locations

Over time, the boards have changed locations. Currently, one is in Nantes, and two others are in Montréal.

    Nantes, France:

The oldest Oripeau board is located on the wall of Trempo in Nantes. Trempo supports artists, especially musicians, and offers creative resources. It’s located in a growing cultural area on the Île de Nantes.

    Montréal, Canada:

Two boards are set up in the gardens of Bâtiment 7 in Montreal, a community-driven space supporting social and artistic projects. Bâtiment 7 plays a key role in the neighborhood, offering workshops and cultural events.
